INTERVIEW WITH SOCCER KEEPER

 LAUREN KELLY

About Lauren Kelly:

Age: 16

Plays for: NB High Performance Academy, U17/U18 Team New Brunswick Canada Games Training Team and FDSA

Lauren Kelly is pushed to work harder everyday from one story she shared with us during the interview. In her first year in competitive soccer she played for a U12 division 1 team and was the only goalie on the team. She absolutely loved it so the next year she tried out for U12 Premiership and made it. The year after that she tried out for U14 Premiership an didn't make it, she was devastated. All of her friends had made U14 while she got bumped to U13 because they needed a goalie. In the end, this pushed her to work even harder and she made the team the next year through dedication. She reminds herself of this everyday and it pushes her to become the best goalie she can be, which is amazing.

1. What number are you and what position do you play?
I'm number 1 and I play goalie.

2. How old were you when you started playing?
I think I was 6 years old.

3. Who inspired you to play soccer?
Well, all my friends were playing soccer, so I decided to join and I really liked it. And now, when I was younger I would always like to be like Manuel Neuer and all the professional goalies and their still like my idols... so yeah.

4.How do you prepare for a game mentally and physically?
Mentally I listen to music, that gets me to focus. And physically I do a really intense warm-up with my other goalie, so either Amelia or Chelsea and that's how I get ready.

5. What do you plan on doing with soccer in the future?
I'm planning on trying to play university soccer or play in a club somewhere.

6. Since you're a goalie, do you have any penalty kick rituals or things that help you before a penalty kick?
Sometimes I'll talk to the player who's taking the kick because that's what my coach taught us to try to like sike them out a bit, and sometimes that works. But most of the time I just get myself into a position that's not quite in the middle of the net, to make the player think that they have more room on one side to shoot,  you can kind of guess easier what side they're going to shoot on. Then right before they shoot you dive, and that's how I get my penalty kicks going!

7. Do you have any tips for people who want to start playing soccer?
I would just say to try it because it's a really fun sport. Maybe if it's they're first time to try to do it with a couple friends because it's always more fun when you're playing with friends. Just have fun with it! Don't take it super, super seriously at the beginning and just get a feel for it and then if they enjoy it enroll with FDSA or any club in there area. It's a really fun time and I encourage it!

8. Who are you playing for right now?
I'm playing for the New Brunswick High Performance Soccer Academy in Moncton and for the U17/U18 Team New Brunswick Canada Games Training team and we're going to start tryouts soon for the FDSA U17 as well.

9. Do you have a certain type of food you eat before a game?
I mean, I eat a lot of food you see so *haha*. This isn't very healthy but my favorite meal is grilled cheese. Sometimes before a game I'll have a nice granola bar. I don't eat much before I play because that's not good but maybe like a little sandwich or grilled cheese, *haha* I really like grilled cheese. Or if I have a few games I'll have a meal about 2 hours before I play. I don't like to eat yogurt before I play because that makes me not feel good. So in the morning I'd probably just have toast and fruit, bananas are always good. Then if it's in the afternoon, grilled cheese, then if it's a the night, grilled cheese *haha*.

10. How does your coach inspire you to become a better player?
My coach Alex Valeiro , she played at one of the best university's in the United States and she played on the National Portuguese team. She's a very, very, very strong soccer player and she relates to me a lot with her personality and we just clicked really well. She's my coach but we're also really close as friends and she always pushes me to work harder. She showed me how to play at a high level of soccer and she made me want to play at a high level of soccer because she did it and she was the captain of her team at Princeton University which is really good. Yeah so she helped me by bringing me to play with UNB and I got to play with her this summer with her team from Calgary which was really cool and that inspires me to want to play more because she gives me really cool opportunities like getting to play with bigger teams and all that.
